What is ARDS
ACUTE RESPIRATORY DISTRESS SYNDROME
ARDS, or Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, is a life-threatening lung condition that occurs when fluid builds up in the tiny, elastic air sacs (alveoli) in your lungs.

A personal journey through sudden loss
I lost my daughter to Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome after what started as the flu, it happened faster than we ever imagined. What seemed like a normal illness turned into ARDS, and I lost my daughter before I even understood what it was. I had never heard of ARDS until it took my daughter. It started as the flu, and within days, ARDS took my daughter. I didn’t know how fast ARDS could happen until it changed my life forever.

What is ARDS?
How it works:
When these air sacs fill with fluid, they cannot fill with enough air. This means less oxygen reaches your bloodstream, depriving your organs of the nourishment they need to function. It typically develops in people who are already critically ill or who have significant physical injuries.
Common Triggers
- Sepsis: A severe and widespread infection in the bloodstream
- Pneumonia: Severe cases of lung infection.
- Inhalation of harmful substances: Such as smoke or chemical fumes.
- Severe Trauma: Major injuries from accidents that damage the lungs directly or indirectly.
Key Symptoms
- Severe shortness of breath (labored and rapid breathing).
- Low blood pressure.
- Confusion and extreme tiredness.

How ARDS affects people
ARDS severely impacts individuals by causing acute respiratory failure, often requiring ventilator support in an intensive care unit. The rapid onset and severity of ARDS can lead to long-term health complications for survivors, including chronic fatigue, muscle weakness, and cognitive impairment. For many, like my daughter, the battle against ARDS is swift and, tragically, can be fatal.
Action & hope: Get involved and spread awareness
After learning about ARDS, we encourage you to take the next step. Get involved, offer help, spread awareness about this critical condition, and seek help if you or a loved one needs it. Together, we can make a difference and prevent more tragic losses.
